about

Podcasts announce themselves to the wider world with their two debut tracks – ‘Dragging the Lake’ and ‘First Things First’ – released through Oslo-based Snertingdal Records, and available now on all streaming services.

Podcasts is what happened when singer-songwriter Ellis Jones (previously of U.K.-based indie-pop project Trust Fund) moved to Norway and begrudgingly searched around for musical collaborators in a new city. He didn’t have to look very far: all of Podcasts work together in the same department at the University of Oslo. Jones is joined by bassist Emil Kraugerud (Dingus, komakid, Tusen Takk), drummer Tore Størvold, and Canadian guitarist Kyle Devine – each contributing their own songs to this democratic new enterprise.

Their stylistic diversity is evident even across these two debut tracks. In ‘Dragging the Lake’, tense, Jones’ declarative post-punk verses are overthrown by an immensely rewarding power-pop chorus in which he cathartically reels off a list of minor ailments before rhetorically concluding: ‘how long can a day take?’ As existential crises go, this one is pretty catchy.

‘First Things First’ explores similar themes of world-weariness, taking the form of a wry how-to guide for the disconsolate. Kyle Devine’s lead vocals are bolstered by three-part harmonies all hoping ‘your debts don’t burden those you love’, in a short, sweet track that blends mournful alt- country with the snappy, literate pop-punk of Waxahatchee and The Weakerthans.
